Everyday Leader Monthly Bonus Tip: Not-So-Sunny Mood? February 23, 2010 |
Sunny Moods are More ProductiveSITUATION:Doldrums of Winter.
Ugh. I feel pudgy and pasty white. Kick
the dog. Get outta my way. KNOW THIS: Two recent studies have found: A positive mood of the leader promotes worker productivity and retention (George & Bettenhausen, 2003) Team members tend to share moods with each other, whether positive or negative. Positive moods are more often associated with increased performance (Totterdell et. Al, 2008) TRY THIS: Put yourself first.
Give your disposition some mood therapy. Introvert? Find some solitude for 10 minutes each morning and do nothing but inventory good things that are happening. Just expose yourself to an enlightening list (well .. you know what I mean). C'mon, it's only 10 minutes. Extrovert? As extroverts, we get our energy from being around others. If you are down, it may be that you have been too isolated from interacting with others. Rectify this by scheduling a coffee break with a friend or calling someone just because you want to see how he is doing. The invested time in yourself will come back to you in increased production.
