The Everyday Leader Monthly Tip, Issue #005 -- Increasing Productivity through States of Mind

This Month's Tip:

Increasing Productivity

through States of Mind

SITUATION:

Getting productive today just ain’t happening. Rather than focusing on critical tasks, you find yourself spinning your effectiveness wheels.

HOW OTHERS GET INSPIRATION:

•  19th century landscape painter J. Turner stated he would tie himself to the mast of a ship during a violent storm in order to feel the power of the sea he was about to paint.

•  Voltaire would write using his lover’s back as a desk.

•  Poet Edith Sitwell would lie quietly in a coffin for inspiration before writing her dark literature.

•  Benjamin Franklin would soak in a bathtub while writing.

•  There are probably undiscovered methods out there that would work for you.

TRY THIS:

1.  Write down a timeframe that you dedicate to set aside right now for adjusting your state of mind (4 minutes works, or take more to relax).

2.  Write down a task you want to get accomplished after you have yourself “regulated” mentally. Could be the one you are avoiding.

3.  Start in on your 4 minutes using one or more of the methods below, one that you know works for you.

•    Acknowledge any non-productive feeling. Label it – anxious, worried, mad, etc.

•    Find a method to connect your mind with your body. For example, step through each of the 5 senses and ask yourself what you are experiencing with each.

•    Focus on an internal point of reference for concentration, rather than submitting to external distractions. For example, think about your neck relaxing, or your brain revving up to work a big problem.

•    Look for humor in something if you need your spirits lifted. (Try hanging around a playground if you have time).

•    Tie yourself to the mast of a ship and drift in the Gulf (works best during hurricane season).

•    Have selected music on an iPod or ready in your car to escape.

4.  After you have done one or more of the above or one of your own choosing, shift your focus back to the task at hand.

Short Story

My Dog Burped  by Katie K. Snapp

Dogs can do that. Maybe not surprising.

But lately Bradley, the immature Black Lab at my house, has shown an affinity for cream sherry. (Really, don’t report me to PETA. He gets only a lick or two). But it seems to make him belch. Yesterday, he burped just in the anticipation of getting a slurp of it.

What has this to do with our topic?

Ever been in a low mood and someone almost falls backward in his chair and his facial expression has such alarm on it that you find it hysterical? Or your toddler sneezes during dinner and a fettuccine noodle comes out her nose? Bet I just made you laugh. Bradley made me laugh. Humor is one effective method for adjusting a mental state.

A burst of energy or an optimal mood can come about at any time. What may seem like a low productivity moment can absolutely change in a heartbeat, and you can control that. Learn what works for you.

If all else fails, sip a little cream sherry and let ‘er rip.
