How to Avoid Annual Goal Setting

Don'tcha love that title?

SITUATION:

You stink at annual goal setting. You feel you should do it, but avoiding it is preferred.

Still ... oughta have some semblance of a strategic direction.

TRY THIS:

3 steps. Do it alone or take your group through it.

StepQuestion to ask yourself Your Answer
Set a visionWhere would you like to be by the end of the year?
(what you would look like as a leader/department/business, what successes, what business activities)

Identify ObstaclesWhat is likely to trip you up?
Momentum activityFind some action that moves you (at least just a little) toward that vision. What can you do within the next 48 hours to start momentum on this?

CAVEAT:

Not sure I recommend this for department goal setting unless you track action items in an ongoing to-do list with assignments to them, but it works really well for personal development goal setting. This method works well for an individual because it involves only one person - you. Departmental or business-wide goal setting gets into the dynamics of herding many people of many styles. Something defined, agreed to, and visible throughout the year works best for that.

Also, when you identify obstacles, consider jotting down several actions that you can take to help prevent these from happening.
