Assertiveness in Conflict

Adjusting your Level for Better Results

Need Guts During Conflict?

Needing to jump headfirst into conflict means increasing your assertion.

Your Objective: push through the discomfort. Work it!

Posture:  sit up straight and lean forward

Verbal: use emphatic statements, draw conclusions, avoid wishy-washy

Pace: move faster, show a sense of urgency

Intensity: practice vocal intensity

Gestures: eliminate non-assertive gestures such as shrugging shoulders or holding palms up in a helpless way

Eye contact: increase direct eye contact

Tenor: state more disagreements, be willing to object and know that it does not mean you are being objectionable

Approach: See how to diagnose.

Need to Pull Back in Conflict?

When you leave a trail of bloodied bodies behind you, take the edge off your assertiveness in conflict. Decrease your assertion.

          Your Objective: Listen to learn.

Posture:  lean back, relax

Verbal: try more conditional statements, leave things open

Pace: slow down, take a breather

Intensity: use a more calming voice

Gestures: Stand shoulder-to-shoulder instead of face-to-face,

Eye contact: keep eye contact but think "warm", not intense

Tenor: find positive things to say, emphasize your approach is about the problem and not personal

Approach: See how to diagnose.

Note to ALL

Changing your demeanor does not mean being someone you are not. Using behaviors too far from your natural approach will appear manipulative to others.
Make small changes.
