How to Choose Executive Training

Marketing brochures and fancy websites are tempting.  But remember, the marketing department is not the training department.  What you may see in an advertised medium should be queried, and a little research done.  Invest time in asking a few questions before you sign-up for that steep investment.

Ask questions about the content in the executive training workshop and about the training company's methodology.  These should include:
  • Who delivers the instruction?
    • This should be an experienced consultant, someone that has had hands-on experience with clients over several years or, better yet, decades.  (But not centuries)
  • What style does the instructor use to deliver material?  Look for methods of learning that vary.  Some good possibilities: case studies, interactive, minimalized lecturing, hands-on, video, panels, etc.
  • How customized is the material for the specific audience?
    • If this is a custom course for your company alone, the entire curriculum should be designed for you.
  • Is the class an all-at-once scenario?  Or spaced-learning where we get together in periods?
  • If it is in spaced-learning, ask about field assignments between classes and see if you can obtain a copy of one.
  • Are there study-buddies for implementing the field assignments and to provide support when implementing new techniques?  A side benefit of executive leadership training is an extended network  in other industries.

The Methodology of Training @ Better-Leadership.com

"Nothing happens until something moves."

-- Albert Einstein

Here, we thrive on connecting with the clients so the material development is simple.

Listen. Design. Deliver.

The thrill is in sharing knowledge with others and seeing leaders excel, not in filling a class with high-paying customers.  Instead, it looks like the start of a partnership, not a transaction.

Use this as a yardstick as you pick and choose what course to attend.

  • Customized material for the participant group’s readiness level

  • Spaced learning: topics over a period of time, versus a few days away getting immersed

  • Field assignments between classes (when spaced learning)

  • Assigned learning partners for holding each other accountable

  • Highly interactive, professionally delivered dialog

  • Optional coaching services to help personalize the material as it gets deployed in the workplace; high potential for success, or utilize your own coach.

Looking for Great Topics

Most leaders are captivated by buzz word topics and nouveau approaches to developing their leader capabilities.  Some of it I like.  But much of it is too dressed up to get the job done.

The ones that often disappoint execs usually fall into one of two categories:

1 - hollow content covered up by gripping objectives

        or

2 - complicated models that take a leader on a roadmap of improbabilities.  Overthinking.

Either of those may indeed be a smart investment in time, but it is too hard to tell.  Ask for references from previous attendees. See if you can get a detailed agenda, complete with some examples of content if possible.

The verdict?

You just cannot go wrong with the fundamentals.  Are you over-qualified to spend time on those?  Maybe.  A good fundamental, like communication, needs regular maintenance and personal fine-tuning.  But it also can be built upon the more advanced levels.

So buzz words are okay, but consider how much time you should be spending on the fancy stuff, and consider how to keep your fundamentals in their prime.
