Leader Reinforcement
Discovering How You are
Performing as a Leader
Bring
in the reinforcements!
You
do not necessarily need outside help, but you should see what is
working, what is not, and change as necessary. That is what I
mean by
reinforcement.
Hear from others, look at the data, implement accordingly.
You probably do that already, but awareness of it will refine
it.
I guarantee
that!MEASURES
& INDICATORS
When you get it
right, you need to know it. And remember,
your perspective is
not always gospel. Just because you see it one way does not
mean reality reflects it. Subjective measures are acceptable
to couple with objective ones. You can measure
anything.
Maybe not scientifically, but you can measure
anything.
FEEDBACK
FROM OTHERS
Ask others how you are
doing as a leader. Are you adapting your skills
appropriately? Are you reading the environment
adequately? Get good at asking others. Really … get
good at it.
COACHING
Now
that coaching is on the scene, I wonder what took it so long to become
popular. Many leaders are discovering the value of asking for
confidential, private feedback for implementing performance
improvements and asking for ideas. It is safe. It
is low-risk. And it can be very powerful.
Look
back on a situation that you handled recently. Remember the
clarity you had after the fact? If only you had thought it
through more, and seen the predictable outcome. Or if only
you had the chance to practice a critical speech to some real ears.
Or
maybe you want a reality check for mapping out a strategy you are
considering. I bet you have an idea what will work best, you
are naturally resourceful, and you are smart. But a few
minutes mentally positioning your intention is all you need.
A
coach can
serve that purpose.
